The School of Visual Art offers comprehensive training in a wide range of art styles. It is specifically aimed at talented students with a passion for Visual Art and a vision for a career in a number of facets of the Visual Art industry.

The School of Visual Art course is unique in that it offers creative classroom training to provide solid foundations in the discipline of Visual Art. This is complemented through participation in regular master classes and workshops directed by industry trained specialists at the cutting edge of their field. Further visual art exposure will be gained through weekly workshops, providing regular skill building and visual art practice. The ASTA School of Visual Art course looks for students who show the potential to pursue a career in the Visual Art industry in the future.

It is ideal for students who display natural talent, enhancing this ability by providing a strong foundation in fundamental training and industry specific knowledge.

DRAW03

Observational Drawing: (still life)

Students learn about the relationship between observation and recording three dimensional illusions to a two dimensional surface through studying detail, depth, viewpoints, overlap and layers in both real life and drawings.

DRAW04

Principles of Design: (landscape with media experimentation)

Students learn about composition in drawings by studying the principles of design through techniques and processes such as perspective and plane recessions using a variety of materials for effect and purpose.

DRAW05

Frameworks, Proportion and Scale: (portraiture)

Students learn about drawing people realistically and portraying their individual characteristics and personalities according to the conventions and rules of frameworks, proportion and scale.

DRAW06

Alternative Drawing Techniques: (media experimentation)

Students explore, to its full potential, the possibilities of each drawing media, material, skill, process and technique previously learned during the course. Students engage in a series of expressive, alternative and risk taking drawing exercises that develop their own personal style through stylization, abstraction and non objective / non representational drawing.

Life Drawing 1: (contours and lines of the body)

Students study and learn about the organic and natural lines, contours, shapes and movements associated with the human body in drawing.

Life Drawing 2: (shape , tone and form of the body)

Students study and learn about the variety of shapes, structure and form of the human body from an anatomical perspective.

Life Drawing 3: (individual theme for portfolio development)

Although assessed as two separate components both semesters’ work continue and combine seamlessly to contribute to a portfolio suitable for tertiary entry. Students develop their own personal approach and style towards life drawing as stimulus to develop and support their major and minor themes for their tertiary entry portfolio.

Introduction to Digital Photography: (Post Modernism)

Students learn how to use digital cameras, take photographs and manipulate images using industry standard software and technology.

PAINT02

Traditional Painting: (oil painting still life)

Students learn about the traditional skills, techniques and processes associated with oil painting through studying the genre of still life realism.

PRINTPHOTO02

Printmaking and Digital Photography: (Pop Art, Commercial Art and Graphic Art)

Students learn about the benefits and potential of combining traditional (printmaking) and contemporary (digital photography) art making practice and disciplines through the genre of Pop Art, Commercial Art and Graphic Art.

PAINT03

Alternative, Abstract and Expressive Painting: (Portraiture and Abstract Expressionism)

Students study the potential and possibilities of painting alternatively, abstractly, expressively and conceptually using a variety of painting media, materials, techniques and processes.

Students choose a two dimensional discipline to study from the perspective of a conceptually, themed unit. This study is based on students drawing upon their prior skills, knowledge and ability in their chosen discipline and developing, expanding and extending their competency in this area. This studio must be closely linked to, inspired, influenced or complemented by the student’s chosen three dimensional major discipline and their drawing studio.

Students can select their two dimensional major from Year 11 to be their primary focus major in Year 12 and specialize in this discipline throughout the year. Students continue their extended study in their chosen two dimensional discipline based on a personal thematic, stylistic and aesthetic development to prepare a portfolio suitable for tertiary entrance.

Students can select their three dimensional major studio discipline from Year 11 to be their secondary focus minor in Year 12 and use it to influence their primary focus major. Students continue their extended study in their chosen three dimensional discipline based on a personal thematic, stylistic and aesthetic development to prepare a portfolio suitable for tertiary entrance that also complements their primary focus major in two dimensional studio discipline.

Ceramics: (potting and throwing)

Students learn the skills, techniques and processes associated with throwing pots and using a potting wheel for constructing mass produced receptacles.

SCULPT02

Sculpture: (jewellery smithing)

Students learn about the history of jewellery smithing and design and construct various jewellery ensembles with an aesthetic appeal.

YEAR 10

CLAY03

Large Scale Ceramic Sculptures: (hand building extension techniques)

Students design, construct and build large scale vessels and receptacles for both decorative and functional purpose based upon hand building clay techniques already learned.

SCULPT03

Sculpture Construction: (armature)

Students learn about designing, constructing and building sturdy armature for sculptures based on basic engineering and architectural principles.
