The School of Combined Performing Arts offers comprehensive training in Acting, Dance and Voice. It is specifically aimed at talented students with a passion for the Performing Arts and a vision for a career in any facet of the industry.

The Combined Performing Arts course is unique in that it offers creative classroom training to provide solid foundations across the three major performing arts disciplines. This is complemented through participation in regular master classes and workshops directed by industry trained specialists at the cutting edge of their field. Further performance exposure is gained through weekly performance workshops, providing regular skill building and performance practice.

Dance in the Combined Performing Arts course is completed over four years catering for students in a combined Year 9 and 10 class and also a combined Year 11 and 12 class. Students are divided into an Advanced and a Foundation class according to individual skill levels, experience and interests. The Advanced course is specifically aimed at students who wish to pursue Dance as a career. The course offers units that challenge and extend talented dancers. The Foundation course teaches students the basic skills of a variety of dance styles and genres. Body Conditioning will be incorporated in all units to increase body awareness, strength and flexibility.

The ASTA Combined Performing Arts course looks for students who show the potential to become capable, well rounded performers in the future. It is ideal for students who display natural talent, enhancing this ability by providing a strong foundation of technical skills.

CPAA001

Introduction to Acting

To provide students with the basic tools of acting/ to lay the foundations of acting techniques and to release spontaneity through improvisation and impulse work. Students are introduced to the dramatic styles of Drama and Comedy in a theoretical component.

Ballet/Ailey Contemporary (Advanced)

Ballet and Contemporary Dance will be combined to distinguish the differences between each style.  Ballet technique will be studied with a focus on correct posture and alignment.  Students will learn a series of barre and centre exercises.  Contemporary technique will be explored with a particular focus on the choreography of Alvin Ailey and the Horton Dance Technique.  For the major task, students will perform an Ailey inspired dance.

Ballet/ Contemporary (Foundation)

This introductory unit combines Ballet and Contemporary Dance to distinguish the differences between each style.  Students will learn the correct posture and alignment for each style of dance.  Development of Ballet technique will be achieved through a series of barre and centre exercises.  Contemporary technique will be explored through a range of ensemble work and performance repertoire.

Hip Hop Basics (Foundation)

This introductory unit will explore the Hip Hop dance genre.  Students will learn the stylistic qualities of Hip Hop dance through industry professional workshops.  This popular dance unit will explore the history and origins of Hip Hop dance.  Students will learn the fundamental skills in a range of styles including popping, locking, tutting, krumping, top locking and gliding.

Cabaret (Advanced)

This introductory musical theatre unit will follow the creation and development of Dance in Musical Theatre over the eras.  A comparative focus on the varying dance styles evident in Musical Theatre will occur with a particular focus on Cabaret.  Musicals such as Cabaret, Chicago and Sweet Charity will be studied.  Students will have the opportunity to develop their singing and acting skills for Musical Theatre.

Voice Studies

To create a strong, free flexible voice by connecting the breath through movement and sound. Students will acquire an understanding of voice theory and practice, and will understand the need to establish a daily habit of vocal exercise.

Acting Techniques I

To develop and utilise the skills of physical and vocal improvisation in different contexts. Students will be introduced to and experiment with basic script conventions in order to achieve characterisation. Students will work on a piece of performance that gives the audience a sense of the story of their life.

Musical Theatre (Foundation)

This introductory unit will follow the creation and development of Dance in Musical Theatre over the eras.  A comparative focus on the varying dance styles evident in Musical Theatre will occur, whilst students will have the opportunity to develop their singing and acting skills for Musical Theatre.  This unit will focus on characterization and storytelling through singing, acting and dance. Students will study musicals such as The Producers, The Sound of Music, The Wizard of Oz and Mary Poppins.

Tap Technique (Advanced)

Tap technique will be studied in this unit with particular connection to Tap dance in Musical Theatre.  The incorporation of Tap in musicals such as 42nd Street, Chicago and Singin’ in the Rain will be examined.  A greater knowledge of the history and origins of tap will be focused on as well as tap technique and terminology.  Classes will consist of barre and centre amalgamations eventually forming performance repertoire.

Voice Studies

This subject delivers a foundation of voice technique, incorporating the issues of vocal development, vocal training and vocal health.  Exploring physical alignment, breathing exercises, and basic physiological principles, this course will build not only skills, but confidence in the young performing artist.

Acting Techniques II

Students will focus on the style of realism and will examine the contributions of influential Realist director, Stanislavski. Using scene work as a basis, actors will investigate the inner and outer worlds of character in the context of a scripted scene.

Ballet/Graham Contemporary (Advanced)

Ballet technique will be studied as students learn a series of barre and centre exercises.  Correct posture and alignment for Ballet will be developed throughout this unit. Contemporary technique will be explored with a particular focus on Martha Graham Technique.  Students will learn Graham Movement Vocabulary including contraction and release, weight transference, floorwork, skips and jumps.  The major task of this unit is a Graham inspired dance.

Latin and Ballroom Dance (Foundation)

This unit will explore a range of social dances including the Jive, Samba, Cha Cha and Salsa.  Students will participate in workshops for each style and develop performance repertoire.  Latin and Ballroom styles will also be examined in Musical Theatre productions such as Grease, Shout, Dirty Dancing and Chicago.

Jazz Technique (Advanced and Foundation)

This unit focuses on Jazz technique development.  A range of historical periods of Jazz will be focused upon in technique classes.  Changes and trends in Jazz dance will also be visited via continued ensemble and repertoire work.

CPAD010

Jazz Musicals (Advanced and Foundation)

Jazz technique development will be the focus of this unit with direct correlation to Jazz dance in Musical Theatre.  Musicals including The Wiz, Footloose, Flashdance, West Side Story and FAME will be examined and one musical will be selected as inspiration for a dance in the Jazz genre.

Voice Studies

This course consolidates the previous ‘discovery’ subjects via specific movement and improvisation exercises designed to achieve balance, strength and creativity in the emerging vocal artist.  Priority is given to musical accuracy, tone production, projection and pronunciation.  A main focus is to ensure that appropriate postural issues are addressed to assist progress to higher levels of achievement.

Advanced Acting

Actors will perform various works within a classic context.  Students will discover the importance of the physical and vocal ability working within the style of classic texts.

Voice Studies

Expanding on foundational knowledge, this subject will continue to build a comprehensive understanding of the technical issues of the voice.  Time will be spent exploring individual instruments and breaking down the profile of a singer, analysing vocal technique, creative purpose and musical and dramatic intention.

Swan Lake Ballet and Contemporary Technique (Advanced)

By this stage in the program students will have gained an extensive knowledge of terminology and repertoire in both the Ballet and Contemporary styles.  The high level of technique will be maintained in Ballet and Contemporary with Advanced female students completing pointe work.  There will be a strong focus on Ballet in this unit.  Students will study the Classical Ballet Swan Lake and perform an adapted repertoire for their major task.

Ballet/Thrills and Spills Contemporary (Advanced and Foundation)

Students will continue to extend their knowledge of terminology and repertoire in both the Ballet and Contemporary styles.  Advanced female students will perform barre and centre pointe exercises.   Additional technical aspects of Contemporary dance will be covered in this unit.  Technique development will be furthered to allow for more advanced ensemble work.  In this unit, students will also begin to learn the basics in Gymnastics and Acrobatics.  These skills will allow students to feel more comfortable in their bodies and have a greater ability to take risks, to allow the body to release and to give the style of Contemporary an extra dynamic.

Dance Audition Technique (Advanced)

The audition process and creation of a portfolio will occur in this unit.  Students will learn all the skills needed to audition in Dance from successfully performing set and unseen sequences, to improvising to given stimulus.  Students will additionally prepare two contrasting Dance solos in their most gifted genres.  Headshots will be organised and taken in this course and students will learn how to compile and to present a ‘Dance’ specific Resume and Folio.

Acting for Film

Actors will perform various works for camera and discover the effect of thought, image, action and gesture in communicating a character for screen. Actors will explore the roles of various acting states in terms of screen dynamics.

CPAD014

Film Clip Dance (Foundation and Year 11 Advanced)

This popular dance unit will explore dance styles seen in current music film clips, in particular jazz and funk styles.  Jazz technique development will be furthered to allow for more advanced ensemble work.  Jazz repertoire and ensemble work will be focussed on the genre of Dance for Screen.  This will entail a focus on the most current and up to date dance genres, performance projection for camera and will also allow for Dance composition and design.

Acting Monologues

This unit provides students with the opportunity to prepare for an acting audition for tertiary study.  Students will work with tertiary texts to define and demonstrate their own ‘method’ of acting.

Studies in Directing

This unit provides a broad overview of the contribution of past and present directors to the development of contemporary theatre. Students will understand aspects of the director’s craft and will practically explore the role of the Director through selecting, adapting, rehearsing and performing an extract from a play for a variety of ensembles.

Process Drama

Students are given the opportunity to explore and develop the form and nature of process drama. The unit will provide students with the practical techniques to apply the conventions in particular contexts. In groups, students will write and manage a drama which demonstrates their understanding of Process Drama.

Performance Studies

Students will be given the opportunity to utilise all of the acting tools they have been developing over the course and produce a performance. Under the guidance of a director the students will focus solely on the production of the performance.

Hip Hop Extension (Foundation and Year 11 Advanced)

Additional aspects of Hip Hop Dance will be covered in this unit.  Hip Hop history, traditions and specific styles within the genre will be revisited.  Technique development will be furthered to allow for more advanced ensemble work.  This unit will focus on the most current and up to date Hip Hop styles including popping, locking, tutting, krumping, top locking and gliding.

(All Foundation students and year 11 Advanced Students)

The audition process and creation of a portfolio will occur in this unit.  Students will learn all the skills needed to audition for Musical Theatre from successfully performing set sequences, to improvising to given stimulus.  Headshots will be organised and taken in this course for Year 12 students and students will learn how to compile and to present a ‘Combined Performing Arts’ specific Resume and Folio.

In this unit students will study the musical Chicago and prepare an audition piece showcasing dancing, acting and singing skills.  Year 11 students will design and present their audition piece in pairs and Year 12 students will complete the task individually.

(All Foundation students and year 11 Advanced Students)

The audition process and creation of a portfolio will occur in this unit.  Students will learn all the skills needed to audition in Musical Theatre from successfully performing set sequences, to improvising to given stimulus.  Headshots will be organised and taken in this course for Year 12 students and students will learn how to compile and to present a ‘Combined Performing Arts’ specific Resume and Folio.

In this unit students will study the musical FAME and prepare an audition piece including a solo showcasing dancing, acting and singing skills.  Year 11 students will design and present their audition piece in pairs and Year 12 students will complete the task individually.

VOCPPI

Performance Package

Exploring the finer points of being a performer, this course will assist students with decorum, deportment and etiquette in all areas of presentation.   The students will package a performance/portfolio/learn how to build a public profile.  Students in all years are expected to develop a portfolio of all classroom activities.

BUS

Business of the Business

This subject shows students the business side of the Arts Industry.  It challenges them in the fields of Arts entrepreneurship, creative productivity, live and recorded sound, events and marketing and press kits.  Students will be exposed to the side of the industry that many Artists get to see.
