The School of Film and Television offers comprehensive training in a wide range of Media styles. It is specifically aimed at talented students with a passion for Film and Television and a vision for a career in a number of facets of the Media industry.

The School of Film and Television course is unique in that it offers students the ability to gain a nationally recognised “Certificate III in Broadcasting (Television)” within the senior program. This is complemented through participation in regular master classes and workshops directed by industry trained specialists at the cutting edge of their field. Further media exposure will be gained through weekly performance workshops, providing regular skill building and media practice. The ASTA School of Film and Television course looks for students who show the potential to pursue a career in the Film and Television industry in the future.

It is ideal for students who display natural talent, enhancing this ability by providing a strong foundation in fundamental training and industry specific knowledge.

Designing Animation

The students develop individual knowledge, concepts and skills to articulate and present capabilities of motion through drawing for contemporary animation practices.  This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to interpret the creative brief, and to develop and implement animation designs for productions.

Stop-Frame Animation
(flat plane)

This unit utilises the students’ skills and knowledge of interpreting and designing to produce a stop-motion animation.  Students plan animation keys and background plates before individually drawing animated images using the traditional methods of early animators.

Designing 3D Animation

This unit focuses on 3D animation before the common use of computer animation.  The students will gain an understanding of claymation, identifying and analysing existing projects to learn how sets and lighting contribute to the 3D illusion.  In this environment, students are guided to become experimental in the design of their production.

Stop-Frame Animation (modelling)

This unit emphasises production in a practical environment, allowing students to independently explore animation and movement.  This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to produce models, sets and animated images for productions within the cultural industries.

This unit provides the IT skills and knowledge required to update the information on the SCTV website, providing information on SCTV events, using the streaming server to narrowcast SCTV productions and providing a directory for SCTV project enquiries.

Event Technology Practice

This unit provides students with the opportunity to apply content to authentic learning sites through participation in the events and productions of SCTV.  Students develop a professional attitude through the responsibilities and opportunities presented to them.

Installation of Broadcast equipment

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to interpret a pre-designed event, allowing students to implement the existing management plan for the installation of broadcast equipment and facilities required for an event. Students are responsible for meeting the client’s needs and conducting final testing prior to the event.

Maintenance

Students examine the policies and regulations required for the operation of an event and become involved with the maintenance and care of equipment.  This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare, write and distribute a safety report for any equipment and/or production within the cultural industries.

News Industry

This unit allows students to explore the history of the News industry, identifying the different forms and conventions used in the reporting of a news piece.  Students research and adopt industry practices associated with journalism to design and produce a news report.

News Writing

In this unit students learn to think like journalists, to evaluate events for their potential news value, to record interviews and perform other reporting tasks and to write news stories. It includes the evolution and theories of reporting.

This unit explores how the advancements in technology have impacted on the private lives of average citizens.  Students will investigate current affair programs, reality television and documentaries and the effect these productions have had on everyday living habits.

Celebrity Obsession

Students will study the celebrity obsession, forming opinions about the Paparazzi, tabloids and gossip magazines.  This unit provides students with the skills and knowledge to develop critical awareness regarding media influences.  Students will question fabricated news articles and develop a basic understanding of ethics in journalism.

Year 11 / 12 SCTV Non-Linear Editing Pre-Event & Live

Operate a non-linear editing system

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use a non-linear editing system for the editing of digital media for any screen based production. Film and/or video may have been used in the production phase and digitised for the editing process. Students will be required to produce SCTV Presentation material for at least one SCTV External Event.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish the segment topic, prepare and record source material for the segment, and compile the segment for any television or radio program. Students will be required to produce SCTV Presentation material for at least one SCTV External Event.
