School of Dance

The School of Dance will offer comprehensive training in a wide range of dance styles. It will be specifically aimed at talented students with a passion for Dance and a vision for a career in a number of facets of the Dance industry.

The School of Dance course will be unique in that it will offer creative classroom training to provide solid foundations in the discipline of Dance. This will be complemented through participation in regular master classes and workshops directed by industry trained specialists at the cutting edge of their field. Further performance exposure will be gained through weekly performance workshops, providing regular skill building and performance practice.

The ASTA School of Dance course will look for students who show the potential to become capable, well rounded dancers in the future. It will be ideal for students who display natural talent, enhancing this ability by providing a strong foundation of technical skills.

YEAR 9

DANJA2

Jazz II

Jazz technique development will continue in this unit.  A range of historical periods of Jazz will be focussed upon in technique classes.  Changes and trends in Jazz dance will also be visited via continued ensemble and repertoire work.

DANTA2

Tap II

Tap technique growth will continue in this unit.  A greater knowledge of the history and origins of tap will be focussed on as well as tap technique and terminology.  Classes will consist of barre and centre amalgamations eventually forming performance repertoire.

DANMT1

Musical Theatre

This introductory unit will follow the creation and development of Dance in Musical Theatre over the eras.  A comparative focus on the varying dance styles evident in Musical Theatre will occur, whilst students will have the opportunity to develop their singing and acting skills for Musical Theatre.

DANBC2

Ballet II, Contemporary II  and Body Conditioning II

This unit focuses on the elements previously gained in all three components to this subject.  Ballet and Contemporary Dance will be combined to distinguish the differences between each style.  The body conditioning component will be explored through the awareness of the body moulding process of combining Ballet and Contemporary.

Jazz III

Additional history and technical aspects of Jazz dance will be covered in this unit.  Technique development will be furthered to allow for more advanced ensemble work.  Repertoire extension will take into account both current and traditional Jazz styles.

Ballet III & Music for Dancers

This unit focuses on expanding the elements and techniques gained in previous ballet units.  Additionally, this unit will place a strong focus on the foundations of music studies, to provide the appropriate tools to create and deconstruct musical timings.  This will mean working on the building blocks of musical practice and understanding music-making, primarily in the context of Ballet.

Jazz V

This advanced course will challenge students in their technical aptitude, flexibility and control of Jazz genre.  Ensemble performance and choreography will occur and students will also develop a solo repertoire to showcase their talent across Jazz genres.

Ballet V and Contemporary V

By this stage in the program students will have gained an extensive knowledge of terminology and repertoire in both the Ballet and Contemporary styles.  The high level of technique will be maintained, while a strong focus will be given towards leading students through a typical audition process for these two styles.

Musical Theatre III and Acrobatics II

Musical Theatre Dance skills will be married with vocal and characterisation work, culminating in total Musical Theatre performances in two differing Musical Theatre genres.  Students will be required to fulfil the role of a lead in one Musical Theatre piece, as well as appreciate the importance of being a chorus member in an additional Musical Theatre piece.  Students will also build on Acrobatics skills previously gained in the combined Contemporary unit.  Development of Acrobatics in this unit will occur within a theatrical context as part of the characterisation process.

Auditioning

The audition process and creation of a portfolio will occur in this unit.  Students will learn all the skills needed to audition in Dance from successfully performing set sequences, to improvising to given stimulus.  Students will additionally prepare two contrasting Dance solos in their most gifted genres.  Headshots will be organised and taken in this course and students will learn how to compile and to present a ‘Dance’ specific Resume and Folio.

DANTT2

Tools of the Trade II

Tools of the Trade II will focus on the more creative side of Dance production.  Costume design, selection and construction for an allocated Dance piece will form part of the task.  Additionally, students will explore set design and creation, make-up and hair design and application and lighting, music and other technical design and operation skills.  This course will allow students to develop an understanding of and ability to present professional Dance performances for public viewing.

DANPP1

Performance Psychology and Pathways

This student directed course will require students to map their desired pathway beyond the ASTA School of Dance.  Students will make contact with relevant tertiary institutions and companies to arrange auditions and interviews.  Students will also be prepared for the psychologically and physically demanding future that a profession in Dance holds for them.  Self-esteem, the ability to self reflect and perspective will be developed and nurtured in this final chapter of their ASTA journey.
