School of Acting

The School of Acting will offer comprehensive training in a wide range of acting styles. It will be specifically aimed at talented students with a passion for the Performing Arts and a vision for a career in Acting and a number of facets of the Acting industry. 

The School of Acting course will be unique in that it will offer creative classroom training to provide solid foundations in the discipline of Acting. This will be complemented through participation in regular master classes and workshops directed by industry trained specialists at the cutting edge of their field. Further performance exposure will be gained through weekly performance workshops, providing regular skill building and performance practice.

The ASTA School of Acting course will look for students who show the potential to become capable, well rounded performers in the future. It will be ideal for students who display natural talent, enhancing this ability by providing a strong foundation of technical skills.

Course Description

ACT001

Introduction to Acting

To provide students with the basic tools of acting/ to lay the foundations of acting techniques and to release spontaneity through improvisation and impulse work. Students are introduced to the dramatic styles of Drama and Comedy in a theoretical component.

ACT002

Acting Techniques I

To develop and utilise the skills of physical and vocal improvisation in different contexts. Students will be introduced to and experiment with basic script conventions in order to achieve characterisation. Students will work on a piece of performance that gives the audience a sense of the story of their life. 

VOI001

Introduction to Voice

To create a strong, free flexible voice by connecting the breath through movement and sound. Students will acquire an understanding of voice theory and practice, and will understand the need to establish a daily habit of vocal exercise.

DIR400

Studies in Directing

This unit provides a broad overview of the contribution of past and present directors to the development of contemporary theatre. Students will understand aspects of the director’s craft and will practically explore the role of the Director through selecting, adapting, rehearsing and performing an extract from a play for a variety of ensembles.

PRO300

Process Drama

Students are given the opportunity to explore and develop the form and nature of process drama. The unit will provide students with the practical techniques to apply the conventions in particular contexts. In groups, students will write and manage a drama which demonstrates their understanding of Process Drama.

MOV001

Introduction to Movement

Introduction to Movement aims to allow the students to discover their body as an expressive force, and to create physical images to interpret physical characteristics to advance meaning. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics, rhythm and muscularity of movement through such practices as dance, yoga, pilates, acrobatics and karate.

Stage Movement II

The focus of Stage Movement 2 is the practical application of physical technique into performance. Students will individually and in groups, create physical/movement performance pieces and will create characters from a physical perspective. Practices used in first year will be continued through second year.

Stage Voice II

Students will continue to learn about the anatomy and physiology of voice and will apply the techniques of speech and speech devices to storytelling and eventually text. Students will learn to make vocal choices appropriate to character, style and performance.

CAM301

Acting for Camera

Actors will perform various works for camera and discover the effect of thought, image, action and gesture in communicating a character for screen. Actors will explore the roles of various acting states in terms of screen dynamics.

AUD301

Auditions

Students will be given guidelines for choosing, preparing and presenting audition pieces. This unit will provide the learner with the opportunity to compile a selection of appropriate audition materials for presentation, and to provide audition awareness.

ACT003

Acting Techniques II

Students will focus on the style of realism and will examine the contributions of influential Realist director, Stanislavski. Using scene work as a basis, actors will investigate the inner and outer worlds of character in the context of a scripted scene.

ART005

Artist in the World

Students will develop skills in articulating their personal aesthetic and their aims and intentions as an artist, and will explore ways of maturely responding to a work of art or theatre. 

VOI 305

Stage Voice and Dialects/accents

Students will continue to work on the technique of using their voice appropriately. The students will draw on their voice training to explore and workshop different accents for stage performance.

PST 501

Performance Studies

Students will be given the opportunity to utilise all of the acting tools they have been developing over the course and produce a performance. Under the guidance of a director the students will focus solely on the production of the performance.

SMC 402

Stage Movement/ Combat

Advanced classes in physical theatre develop physical expressiveness, clarity and strength in combat. The students build on their previous movement training and learn the fundamentals of stage combat.

BOB 502

Business of the Business

This unit aims to facilitate a smooth and confident transition from ASTA to life in the arts workforce. It explores current issues in the arts and develops professional skills including career management, networking in the industry and have the ability to work as an autonomous actor.

APM 403

Arts Production Management

Students will be taught the marketing and technical requirements of putting on a performance. The unit will workshop the lighting and stage managing requirements. The second semester will focus on play-building and ensuring students acquire an understanding of the genre. The unit will give students the opportunity to work with stimulus in order to create their own scripts.
